A Nation Of Victims (The Decay Of The American Character), Sykes, Charles J.
1 A Nation Of Victims (The Decay Of The American Character)
Sykes, Charles J.: St. Martin's Press; New York, New York 1992 0312082975 / 9780312082970
First Edition: First Printing Hard Cover Very Good in Very Good Dust Jacket: 6.5 x 9.5 in.: 289 pages

001786001786: Dustjacket now protected by a new Brodart Mylar Cover. Jacket's front flap is creased. Worn spot on front flyleaf from removed original owner's nameplate. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. Review "In a trenchant and tonic analysis of America's loss of backbone, the author of The Hollow Men alleges that we have become a nation of self-proclaimed victims. " I am not responsible; it's not my fault" is the common refrain linking compulsive gamblers, co-dependents in dysfunctional relationships, obese people "oppressed" by narrow restaurant seats and others who claim victim status, Sykes charges. He excoriates the psychiatric profession for continually inventing new disease categories and lashes our "therapeutic culture, " which turns everyday difficulties into certified psychological problems. He stretches his argument too thin, however, when he attacks '60s activism, and "victimist explanations" of inner-city poverty and youth crime that, in his view, have distorted our criminal justice system, schools and urban policy. Even here, though, he scores points, calling upon Americans to dismantle the culture of victimization by recognizing personal responsibility and refusing to reflexively blame others. His sometimes shrill critique of sensitivity workshops, Afrocentric scholars and minorities "embracing their victim status" will make this book controversial. "

American Slavery 1619 - 1877, Kolchin, Peter
2 American Slavery 1619 - 1877
Kolchin, Peter: Hill & Wang Pub; New York, New York 1993 080902568X / 9780809025688
Presumed First Edition Hard Cover Good in Good Dust Jacket: 5.75 x 8.5 in.: 304 pages

005125005125: Dustjacket now protected by a new Brodart Mylar Cover. Boards and pages are tightly bound, sharp cornered, but inside of jacket is stained black from book cloth binding apparently having become damp and bled onto jacket, also slightly wrinkling bottom edge of jacket. No tears or cuts. "A concise, engaging overview of American slavery from the beginning of the colonial era to emancipation and its aftermath. Kolchin takes a broad geographical perspective, putting American slavery in the context of a general trend toward use of forced labor on the periphery of an expanding Europe. This incisive synthesis fills a major gap for the general reader and for historians, who will find it both stimulating and appealing. "

006537006537: Dustjacket now protected by Archival Quality Mylar Cover. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. Texas A&M Southwestern Studies Number Seven. "Before the discovery of oil and the advent of Progressivism to Texas, the state dealt with prison overcrowding by leasing convicts and their labor to private industry and funneling the profits into the state's coffers. In this book, the first on convict leasing in Texas, historian Donald Walker examines all the economic, social, and political aspects of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Texas that resulted in the leasing system and its eventual demise. Convict leasing resulted in high mortality rates among prisoners, and despite commissions, reports, and warnings to the lessees, stories of abusive guards and intolerable conditions persisted. In the twentieth century, revenues from the oil industry eased the financial woes of the state, and at the same time, a movement for social reform gained momentum. Investigative journalism revealed to the public the abuses of prisoners and mismanagement by the private contractors, and in 1912 the state retook control of the prison system. "

First Printing Hard Cover Fine in Fine Dust Jacket: 8.75 x 11.25 in.: 472 pages

004676004676: Dustjacket now protected by a new Brodart Mylar Cover. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. Here we discover not only the origin and history of many of our most delightful words but also the changing cultural conditions that produced them. With chapters on Americanisms, cyberspace, advertising, fighting words, fitness, geography, economics, sex, crime, gender, generation gaps, and many other subjects, Speaking Freely covers the whole spectrum of language in America from the Pilgrims to the present. In the chapter on American's love affair with booze, for instance, we have a rollicking history of all the delectable words we've devised to describe the condition of drunkenness and its insalubrious effects. If, for example, you were to find yourself frequently groggified, half-shaved, full as a fiddler's fart, balmy, owly-eyed, pifflicated, comboozelated, tanglefooted, ossified, petrified, snockered, or wazzocked, you would often suffer the jim-jams, the jitters, the heebie-jeebies, or the screaming meamies the next day, and would eventually come to be seen as an elbow-bender, a guzzler, a rumhead, swiller, or tosspot. Speaking Freely also explains the droves of new expressions entering our vocabularies. With over 400 illustrations and a generous offering of quotations from Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain to Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Hardwick, and many others, Speaking Freely takes the lid off the American language and shows us where it is, where it's been, and why it's ours. "

"In this book Greenawalt explores the three-way relationship between the idea of freedom of speech, the law of crimes, and the many uses of language. He begins by considering free speech as a political principle, and after a thorough and incisive analysis of the justifications commonly advanced for freedom of speech, looks at the kinds of communications to which the principle of free speech applies. He then turns to an examination of communications for which criminal liability is fixed. Focusing on threats and solicitations to crime, Greenawalt attempts to determine whether liability for such communications seriously conflicts with freedom of speech. In the second half of the book he goes on to develop the significance of his conclusions for American constitutional law, addressing such questions as what should be considered "speech" within the meaning of the First Amendment, and what tests the courts should employ in deciding whether particular criminal statutes should be held constitutional. He concludes that the issues are too complex to yield simple solutions, and insists that the protection of the First Amendment can be reduced neither to one justification nor to one all-purpose test of coverage. 13 The De - Valuing Of America (The Fight For Our Culture And Our Children)

001788001788: Dustjacket now protected by a new Brodart Mylar Cover. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. Review: "This is a predictable memoir of Bennett's trials and tribulations as chairperson of the National Endowment for the Humanities, secretary of the Department of Education, and directorate ("Drug Czar") of the National Drug Control Policy. The interest here is not specifically with the substance of what he said and wrote (copiously available elsewhere) but how he attempted to move insiders, bureaucrats, lobbyists, and the media to his way of thinking. Unfortunately, Bennett habitually encapsulates all issues in the liberal/conservative dichotomy. In typical blunt statements Bennett points out what he feels is right and wrong with American society and posits solutions. Conservatives (and Bennett supporters) will find this title fascinating; liberals and thinkers will find it exasperating, irritating--maybe even enlightening. The De-Valuing of America is recommended with reservations for education collections. - Scott Johnson, Meridian Community Coll. Lib., Miss. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc."
