American Battleships, Reynolds-Wood, Pamela (Editor)
1 American Battleships
Reynolds-Wood, Pamela (Editor): Turner Publishing; Paducah, Kentucky 1991 0938021966 / 9780938021964
First Edition: First Printing Hard Cover Fine with No Dust Jacket as issued: 9 x 12.25 in.: 224 pages

011800011800: No Jacket As Issued. LCCN# 90-070688. Boards and pages are clean, unmarked, bright, tightly bound and sharp cornered. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. "Includes a history of the battleship class of ship, a chapter on the American Battleship Association, first-person 'sea-stories' by battleship crew members, biographical sketches of crew members, photos of members, maps, charts, other battleship veteran groups, and much more! It is interesting to note that several of our states lent their name to more than one battleship. There were two named: USS MAINE, TEXAS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, IOWA, ALABAMA, WISCONSIN, MISSOURI, NEW JERSEY, IDAHO, and MISSISSIPPI. Ironically there never was a battleship commissioned in the U.S. Navy named for the state of Montana and there was one battleship that was named for something other than a state of the union - USS KEARSARGE, named for a mountain in Merrimack County, New Hampshire. I would also like to thank the over 700 battleship veterans who submitted personal sea stories, photos and many accounts of their battleship in action."

"Much of what we know about how steamboats looked between about 1835 and 1900 comes from the meticulously detailed paintings of John and James Bard, twin brothers who were born in New York City in 1815, coincidentally the same year that Robert Fulton died. The Bard brothers taught themselves to paint, turning out their first joint work at the age of twelve, and they became the greatest chroniclers of the steamboat era. Working for owners, captains, boat builders - anyone who would commission a ship's portrait - John and James Bard turned out thousands of stunning paintings that have long been treasured by museums and collectors. Sometimes regarded as folk artists because of the naive directness and simplicity of their paintings, the Bards created works that have become icons of Americana."
