"Castle - The word itself conjures up mystery, romance, intrigue, and grandeur. What could be more perfect for an author/illustrator who has continually stripped away the mystique of architectural structures that have long fascinated modern man? With typical zest and wry sense of humor punctuating his drawings, David Macaulay traces the step-by-step planning and construction of both castle and town. Generous illustrations full of explicit details and unusual perspectives masterfully combine with the straightforward and lucid text to guide the reader through this engrossing exploration. "Winston Churchill is an icon of modern history, but even though he was at the forefront of the political scene for almost sixty years, he might be remembered only as a minor player in the drama of British government had it not been for World War II. In this magesterial book, Roy Jenkin's unparalleled command of the political history of Britain and his own high-level experience combine in a narrative account of Churchill's astounding career that is unmatched in its shrewd insights, its unforgettable anecdotes, the clarity of its overarching themes, and the author's nuanced appreciation of his extraordinary subject. From a very young age, Churchill believed he was destined to play a great role in the life of his nation, and he determined to prepare himself. Jenkins shows in fascinating detail how Churchill educated himself for greatness, how he worked out his livelihood (writing) as well as his professional life (politics) , how he situated himself at every major site or moment in British imperial and governmental life. His parliamentary career was like no other - with its changes of allegiance (from the Conservative to the Liberal and back to the Conservative Party) , its troughs and humiliations, its triumphs and peaks - and for decades almost no one besides his wife discerned the greatness to come. Jenkins effortlessly evokes the spirit of Westminster through all these decades, especially the crisis years of the late 1930s and the terrifying 1940s, when at last it was clear how vital Churchill was to the very survival of England. He evaluates Churchill's other accomplishments, his writings, with equal authority. Exceptional in its breadth of knowledge and distinguished in its stylish wit and penetrating intelligence, this is one of the finest political biographies of our time. "

"Generation is the story of the exciting, all but forgotten decade when four men - Jan Swammerdam, the son of a Protestant apothecary; Nils Stensen (also known as Steno) , a Danish anatomist who first discovered the human tear duct; Reinier de Graaf, the attractive and brilliant son of a rich and successful Catholic architect; and Antoni Leeuwenhoek, a self-taught draper - dared to challenge thousands of years of orthodox thinking about where life comes from. By meticulous experimentation, dissection, and observation with the newly invented microscope, they showed that like breeds like, that all animals come from an egg, and that there are millions of tiny, wriggling 'eels' in semen. At last, the building blocks were in place - although, in one of the great ironies of science, it would be another 150 years before someone finally put all the pieces together to explain how babies are born. My Four Years In Germany, Gerard, James W.
25 My Four Years In Germany
Gerard, James W.: Grosset & Dunlap; New York, New York 1917
Second Edition: First Printing Hard Cover Very Good with no Dust Jacket: 5.25 x 7.5 in.: 328 pages

012599012599: "Illustrated With Numerous Photographic Reproductions of Scenes and Documents." Author was Late Ambassador to German Imperial Court 1914-17. Copy has stamped name of prior owner at top of front flyleaf. Boards and pages are clean, unmarked (except as indicated), bright, tightly bound and sharp cornered. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. Book was published by Grosset & Dunlap, but is copyright by George H. Doran Company and The Public Ledger Company. From the Foreword: "I am writing what should have been the last chapter of this book as a foreword because I want to bring home to our people the gravity of the situation; because I want to tell them that the military and naval power of the German Empire is unbroken; that of the twelve million men whom the Kaiser has called to the colours but one million, five hundred thousand have been killed, five hundred thousand permanently disabled, not more than five hundred thousand are prisoners of war, and about five hundred thousand constitute the number of wounded or those on the sick list of each day, leaving at all times about nine million effectives under arms. I state these figures because Americans do not grasp either the magnitude or the importance of this war. Perhaps the statement that over five million prisoners of war are held in the various countries will bring home to Americans the enormous mass of men engaged."
